News from our Winemaker
The 2012 vintage is a ‘winemaker’s’ year. Nature hasn’t always been on our side, so it took even more work to harvest magnificent fruit at full ripeness, and sacrifice a little. We had to be patient too: the harvest took place from August 24 to October 15, and in the cellar the red wines macerated for up to 5 weeks, while today the white wines are still fermenting in the barrel cellar. 2012 also saw the arrival of new techniques in the winery: the advent of organic wines, the fermentation of our Chenin in a 1,600-liter concrete egg, and the ageing of a red wine in a 2,000-liter oak foudre from Tonnellerie Stockinger.
…A year full of twists and turns, but which in the end reveals some very nice surprises…a winemaker’s year!
Domaine Gayda on the road
Last month was a busy one for the Gayda team.
As soon as the harvest was over, Vincent visited our Cambridge Wine Merchants customers for a ‘food and wine pairing’ dinner with the Cambscuisine team on the theme of game, then in Norwich on the same seasonal theme with William Mason Fine Wines. He then had an important tasting in Amsterdam with our local representative Erik Muller from Pasteuning. The event was well attended. Vincent also enjoyed a warm welcome from the Supper Club in Amsterdam!
David Chardron has been even busier… He started with Estonia and then Latvia. These small countries are starting to consume more and more, and we need to create links with these emerging economies!
David then visited the Ukraine, a fast-growing country, where he met many potential customers. He ended his tour in Poland. This country has seen incredible growth, but the wine market is fragmented. David will find a good importer for us and we see a promising future ahead.
Tim and Barbara visited Bahrain, where we have a very good market, selling over 36,000 bottles a year. The trip ended with a golf tournament, and each tee-off began with a glass of Gayda wine. There was a different wine for each tee, so after 18 holes the golf wasn’t at its best! Many thanks to Gulf Brands for hosting our visit.
It goes without saying that at Gayda, we don’t wait for markets, we find them.
